When I first moved to Toronto in 2000 I hopped on the subway and took a tour of my new city. As I rolled along, at one point I looked up to the banner ads that are fitted along the car’s roof – one was a PSA filler it read: “do the thing and it will give you the energy to do the thing”. It stuck.
We all work hard, play hard, parent, care for our families and friends — and often we fall far too low on our own list of priorities. This is a gentle reminder to move.
Move to stay healthy, move to stay sane, move to feel better – sleep better. Move it or lose it.
If you are thinking: “but…I’m too tired” — I’m telling you now: Do the thing and it will give you the energy to do the thing.
Often I’m “too tired” to get out for my daily 5K walk with the dogs….those days it’s with Yoda-like force that gets me out the door (rain or shine)… 100% of the time I feel better upon return. Even the coldest, rainiest Vancouver days, I dress for it and give myself extra kudos for doing the thing.
It’s in my calendar as a non-negotiable part of my daily routine, yes there are rare exceptions (usually work related) but as a rule we walk. Fast. Power walk.
Certainly not preaching here — just a little motivation, if you are looking or it. I’m saying you can start small. Put on your runners and walk out your front door, as fast as you can charge, for 15 minutes then turn around for home. Soon you will be carving out your route and feeling the benefits. It doesn’t require a membership, a specific time of day, specialized gear, nada.
Do the thing and it will give you the energy to do the thing. Back in :45….I’m headed for Pacific Spirit Park.
